Cultural heritage

Or should we say heritages, because like our landscapes, they are plural: industry, legend, art, gastronomy…

There’s something for every taste, from every age! It’s up to you to discover them!

Discovering an industrial past

A former jewel in the crown of French metallurgy, the Park’s territory is home to a number of major production sites, from the rivets used in the Eiffel Tower to the piping used in the gardens of Versailles. From simple nails, local know-how has developed to the present day.

Not to be outdone, the region is also home to numerous slate mines, which date back to Celtic times and are still sporadically exploited. And what can we say about the timber industry, in an area covered mostly by forest.

Military architecture in evidence!

A former frontline in many conflicts, from the Franco-Spanish wars of the 17th century to the Second World War, the region has been equipped with remarkable fortifications over the centuries.

A land of legends!

“When the mist falls over the pastures and forests, covering valleys and valleys, this land becomes wild and mysterious again. This atmosphere has given rise to many legends and inspired writers and poets.”

The Mawhot

Between Revin and Fumay, the Mahwot slumbers at the bottom of the Meuse river bed. Woe betide anyone who spots it, for this giant prehistoric lizard is said to emerge only to herald disaster.

The legend of the 4 Fils Aymon

Discover the legend of the 4 Fils Aymon, certainly the most memorable story in the region.

The Virgin Mary’s Rock

Signy-le-petit’s Roche à la Vierge is one of those local stories that remain steeped in mystery. Here, the story of a stature of a virgin that cannot be removed from its pedestal.
